Father was the Forest Service officer in charge of the old Fremont Experiment Station on top of Mt. Manitou from about 1926 through 1935. It was closed about 1936 and all the buildings later razed. We lived there every summer those years—so I sort of grew up on Mt. Manitou and "in the shadow of Pikes Peak," We did live in Colo. Spgs. most of the year—partly so we kids could go to school—but on Mt. Manitou every summer. (I did quite a bit of climbing and rock scrambling there as a child and was often on the lower portions of The Barr Trail. I also knew Fred Barr himself—the builder of the trail. He ran tourist burro trips up to the summit of Pikes Peak.)
